Blulift Case Study: Spiderlift 23m
Soft uneven ground, narrow pathways and a glass structure presented Timberline Ltd with a significant working at height challenge when restructuring a storm damaged boat house at Craggaunowen, Co. Clare earlier this year.
The specially constructed glass boathouse, reminiscent of a glacier, houses the original ‘Brendan Boat’, a hide boat in which Tim Severin sailed from Ireland to the United States in 1976, re-enacting the Voyage of St. Brendan the Navigator, reputed to have discovered America centuries before Columbus. Timberline Ltd were contracted by Shannon Heritage, the owners of the site to repair the roof of the boathouse which suffered as a result of a fallen tree in the winter storms. Keeping in character with the natural surrounds of Craggaunowen ‘The Living Past Experience’ the boat house is located in an area of uneven sensitive ground with areas of marsh, rocky inclines and narrow access routes. In order to work effectively around these restrictions and repair the glass boathouse, Timberline hired the Blulift Spiderlift 23m.
Dave Brickenden of Timberline stated that ‘The Blulift Spiderlift 23m was of particular appeal to us in this incidence taking into account the tight spaces to manoeuvre, the risk of ground damage and the stable platform with controlled precision offered by the Spiderlift 23m’ Available as an electrical power option with tracked chassis, Timberline could gently manoeuvre the machine to the complex surrounds of the site. With low ground bearing pressures and compact stowed dimensions the Blulift Spiderlift was delivered to the site location via narrow pathways and tight corners without restriction. Once erected, he Blulift Spiderlift 23m has a working height of 23m and an outreach of 12m.
Of particular interest for Timberline was the proportional electro-hydraulic controls in the basket with 90° rotation and a lift capacity of 200kg. This capability meant that Timberline contractors could operate on a dual basis with 1 operating controls and the other focused on the repair work.
Timberline underwent specialised training prior to hiring the Blulift Spiderlift with onsite service and support as necessary.

Currently in Ireland there is very limited support structures for children under 16 suffering from Acquired Brain Injury. Oorla added ‘the inaugural Moon and Back event is of additional significance as August will mark the first anniversary of Ian ‘Bean’. We hope we can grow it annually and make a real difference to those families. National Seminar Identifies Key Training Gaps
The lack of awareness of legislative changes and variances in basic operator training were among the key themes to emerge from the recent Be Wise at Height national seminar. The event hosted by Blulift identified a number of common areas of concern among safety managers from a variety of industries. The misinterpretation of current legislation was the key issue identified. The seminar included discussions with representatives of the Health & Safety Authority and has prompted the development of a further series of information events to address the key issues identified at the recent event.
The key issues discussed at the event included the misuse of access equipment, lack of awareness of options such as accessories and attachments to work safely at height and the increasing lack of machine maintenance of equipment due to budget cuts. Attendees from utility companies to development and manufacturing plant management companies identified the need to develop thorough training structures in machine examinations. Larger companies identified this as a key gap.
Blulift announced that they have now adopted their 2013 Be Wise at Height campaign as a permanent training and industry safety programme with two further safety information seminars now organised for this Autumn and Winter. A regional seminar will be hosted in September with the theme of Operator Training and Machine Familiarisation. A second event in December will focus on Safety Harnesses and Lanyards. The events will again be organised in conjunction with the Health and Safety Authority and industry experts.
Pat Brown, Safety and Training Manager with Blulift explained the feedback from the national seminar provided the basis for deciding to provide more industry information through regional events. He outlined ‘it was striking the level of misinterpretation of current legislation among companies of all sizes. The decision to host two more events in 2013 is a response to a very definite need for information among safety and facility managers and are designed based on immediate feedback from attendees. We are delighted to have the Health and Safety Authority involved again who also found it very beneficial from a direct feedback point of view. The key learning from the day was the majority of companies are not fully up to speed with legislation and need to pay more attention to the thoroughness of machine inspections.’
There is no charge for the autumn and winter events but places are limited to 40 and most be pre-booked through Blulift on 1890 500 900.
National Seminar highlights being Wise at Height
The Blulift Be Wise at Height campaign hit new heights with the hosting of the first national seminar on safety at height. The event drew attendees from a broad variety of sectors to listen to industry experts and learn first hand of the changing nature of Health & Safety compliance. Based on the success of the event it is proposed to host a further Be Wise at Height industry information evening in the coming months.

He explained ‘the seminar is structured to give attendees the most current information from the industry experts that include HSA and representatives from IPAF’s technical committees. The approach will be focused on equipping attendees with a safety and inspection toolbox to employ with their own equipment and safety practices. Blulift has seen a huge increase in the volume of training being requested across all industries and this event is designed to respond to the key information Safety Managers need to deliver a safety at height message in their companies.’ He added ‘this is a unique opportunity to hear and learn from the industry experts in Ireland and the UK and we are delighted to get the support of the HSA and Lee Simmonds who is recognised internationally for his work.’

Small amount of training to operate it. The safety of the trailer lift alone is worth it for jobs on houses, roofs, trees
